3. The Order of Operations

A very important facet that you will continuously use in mathematics is the order of operations. You should become so proficient in the order of operations that it will be as second nature as breathing. NO REALLY… 🙂

The mnemonic “PEMDAS or Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally” is a clever saying to help talk you through the correct order of operations.

Step 1: Evaluate expressions WITHIN grouping symbols first(parentheses).

Step 2: Evaluate exponents.

Step 3: Multiply and Divide from left to right.

Step 4: Add and Subtract from left to right.
